Year 5&6 Boys’ House Football Competition 2014

More take the Glory in Festival of Football!

On Tuesday 30th September, the Year 5 & 6 boys took to the pitch for the first of our House competitions this year. Glancing at the team sheets, it appeared we were in for a close, competitive tournament and that is exactly how it turned out.

First match was Campion v Howard which produced a flurry of high quality goals. Howard took the lead twice through goals by Harry Yule (1-0) and Jacques (2-1) but on each occasion the lead was cancelled out by two wonderful power strikes by Captain Conor! Final score was 2-2…a cracking start to the tournament! Following this high quality drawn game, Fisher took on More in a very tight encounter. The teams were very evenly matched and eventually only separated by an excellent goal by Amit which gave More a 1-0 victory.

The second round of games kicked off with Fisher playing Campion and this proved to be another very tight game. Once again a solitary strike by Adam proved the difference as Fisher ran out 1-0 winners. More then turned on the power with an impressive 3-0 victory over Howard thanks to goals from Amit and Benson (2).

The title was up for grabs in the final round of games which started with Fisher defeating Howard 3 goals to 1. Scorers for Fisher were Sam, Toby and Alex with Harry Occomore responding for Howard. Fisher had done what they needed to do and could then only rely on Campion defeating More to give them a share of the title. Campion responded superbly, playing with tremendous spirit and fight but eventually another thunder strike from Joseph hit the net despite the brave efforts of Daniel in goal. That single goal proved enough to give More a 1-0 victory and a 100% record.

The games were played in a great spirit and I was thrilled to see the boys playing good football, supporting each other and showing a very sporting attitude – these are the key factors to sport and I expect to see them every time we take part together. Congratulations to all who represented their house…well done!

I caught up with Year 5 football correspondent Adam shortly after the tournament. He told me “It was a very tight tournament and everyone wanted to win but there could only be one winner. Everyone tried their best but More were the strongest on the day. There were some brilliant goals and I was pleased to score one for Fisher. I really enjoyed it.”

We now move on to the Girls tournament on Friday October 3rd. Once again, More are the favourites on paper but as we know, games of football are played on grass not paper. Can More’s girls make it a house double?
