Curriculum
What we’re learning in the Autumn Term
This term, we will look at the changes in our local area using the Census in the 19th and 20th Centuries. We will explore the Victorians and different social standings at the time, and how this impacted the results of the Census.
In our English, we will use the novel “Street Child” by Berlie Doherty to engross ourselves in this period of British history. At Holy Family, we use high-quality texts to inspire our writing, giving children a real purpose and passion for storytelling.
In our Maths, we will have a focus on the use of number in Place Value and strategies that can be used to support the use of the 4 Operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
In RE, we will build on your Year 5 learning of our Faith. In the Autumn term, we will be focusing on our “Creation and Covenant” branch of our new curriculum.
In Science, we will complete our topics on “Living things and their habitats” and “Electricity”.
We will also continue with your Year 5 Spanish learning in our MFL lessons. These will be specifically designed to help support the transition into MFL lessons in your secondary education.
It will certainly be a busy but exciting term!

History and Geography
This year, we will be learning about some new topics in our History and Geography lessons. We will have a focus on our local areas to develop our understanding of the change that has happened in our local communities and in British history. We will also get a chance to look into the Sikh empire in our transition unit that will help prepare you for KS3 History lessons.
PE
PE will take place every Thursday and Friday. Please ensure children wear their PE kit on their PE day. Plimsolls or plain black or white trainers can be worn for outside games. When the weather is cold, the children are allowed to wear school tracksuits. Please note that girls are not allowed to wear tights during PE lessons.
Oracy
Oracy is learning to talk and talking to learn. This will be a key focus in Year 6 to develop the children’s ability to articulate themselves before their transition into Secondary education. We will seek to provide as many opportunities as possible for the children to speak aloud clearly and confidently. There will be paired discussion in every lesson and we will use a range of stem sentences to promote language development eg ‘I agree with … because.
We will also focus on the development and use of new and challenging vocabulary. Please help by encouraging your children to use similar language at home during your family discussions.
Homework
Homework is sent home each week. Maths homework will be set on a Wednesday (due in Monday morning) and SPaG homework will be set on a Friday (due in Wednesday morning). This will provide children with a weekend to complete both pieces. The children are expected to:
- read daily and record in their reading journal
- practice their spelling rule
- a piece of Maths homework
- a piece of English homework
