What we’re learning in the Autumn Term

This term, we dive into the fantastic world of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. At Holy Family, we use high-quality texts to inspire our writing, giving children a real purpose and passion for storytelling.

Our learning journey continues as we explore the Mayan civilisation, discovering their fascinating culture and the historical significance of chocolate. We then shift our focus to the present day, investigating how our food choices impact the environment, encouraging thoughtful and sustainable living.

It’s a term full of imagination, history, and real-world connections!

RE

In line with our fellow Diocesan schools, we are using a scheme called 'To know you more clearly’.

  • Autumn 1- Creation and Covenant
  • Autumn 2- Prophecy and Promise
  • Spring 1- Galilee to Jerusalem
  • Spring 2- Desert to Garden
  • Summer 1- To the ends of the Earth
  • Summer 2- Dialogue and Encounter

PE

PE will take place every Thursday and Friday. Please ensure children wear their PE kit on their PE day. Plimsolls or plain black or white trainers can be worn for outside games. When the weather is cold, the children are allowed to wear school tracksuits. Please note that girls are not allowed to wear tights during PE lessons.

Oracy

Oracy is learning to talk and talking to learn. This will be a key focus in Year 4 to develop the children’s ability to articulate themselves. We will seek to provide as many opportunities as possible for the children to speak aloud clearly and confidently. There will be paired discussion in every lesson and we will use a range of stem sentences to promote language development eg ‘I agree with … because.

We will also focus on the development and use of new and challenging vocabulary. Please help by encouraging your children to use similar language at home during your family discussions.

Homework

Homework is sent home each week. Maths homework will be set on a Wednesday (due in Monday morning) and SPaG homework will be set on a Friday (due in Wednesday morning). This will provide children with a weekend to complete both pieces. The children are expected to:

  • read daily and record in their reading record
  • practice their spelling rule
  • a piece of Maths homework
  • a piece of English homework

Year 4 Times Table Check

By the end of Year 4, all children should be confident and fluent in their times tables from 2- 12.

What is MTC?

The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a short online assessment taken in June. It includes:

  • 25 questions on times tables (2–12)
  • 6 seconds to answer each question
  • 3 seconds between questions
  • Completed in under 5 minutes on iPads

Why is it important?

The MTC helps ensure children are on track with their multiplication knowledge as they move into Upper Key Stage 2. It also helps us identify any gaps and provide support where needed.

Let’s keep practising and make times tables fun and fluent!
