 Mrs Emmerson-Richards

Mrs Osborn is our class teacher, Mrs Emmerson-Richards is our learning support assistant and Miss Taylorson supports us in class on a Tuesday. Below you will find out lots of information about Year 2.

Our topics are:

  • Autumn 1- How was school different in the past?
  • Autumn 2- Would you prefer to live in a hot or cold place?
  • Spring 1-How did we learn to fly?
  • Spring 2- Why is our world wonderful?
  • Summer 1- What is a monarch?
  • Summer 2- What is it like to live by the coast?

English

At our school, we make English exciting and meaningful by linking it to topics children are learning in other subjects. Whether it's writing about fieldwork or reading stories connected to history, this approach helps children understand ideas better, build vocabulary, and enjoy learning across the curriculum. It also encourages curiosity and helps them see how reading and writing are useful in everyday life.

Little Wandle

In Year 2, we continue to build on the strong foundations of phonics using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme. This structured approach helps children revisit and strengthen their phonics knowledge while gradually introducing key spelling rules. As they grow in confidence and fluency, children begin to apply their phonics skills to more complex reading and writing tasks, setting them up for success across the curriculum.

Reading

In Year 2, children continue their reading journey with the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised scheme. As their confidence and decoding skills grow, they begin reading the Little Wandle Fluency chapter books. These engaging stories are specially written to develop reading fluency, expression, and comprehension. They help children become more independent readers, while still providing the structure and support they need to succeed.

Maths

In Year 2, we use the Power Maths programme to help children develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through fun, interactive lessons. Power Maths follows a mastery approach, encouraging children to explore, reason, and solve problems with confidence. With a strong focus on practical activities, visual representations, and discussion, children build solid foundations in number, shape, and measures—preparing them for future success in  maths.  We use Numbots to help children build quick recall and fluency in number facts through fun, interactive games.

Science

In Year 2, we use the White Rose Science scheme to nurture curiosity and develop children's understanding of the world around them. Through hands-on investigations, engaging discussions, and clear progression of scientific knowledge, pupils explore exciting topics such as plants, animals including humans, materials, and habitats. The White Rose approach supports children in asking questions, making predictions, and recording their findings in meaningful ways. Our lessons are designed to build confidence and foster a love of discovery, helping children to see science not just as a subject, but as a way of understanding God’s wonderful creation.

RE

In Year 2, our Religious Education curriculum is rooted in the new RED (Religious Education Directory), guiding children to grow in faith, knowledge, and love of God. This Jubilee Year offers a special opportunity to deepen our understanding of God’s mercy and joy. Through engaging stories from Scripture, prayer, and creative activities, children explore key themes such as belonging, forgiveness, and the life of Jesus. We celebrate the richness of our Catholic tradition while encouraging pupils to reflect on how they can live out Gospel values in their daily lives. The Jubilee theme inspires us to be people of hope and joy, sharing God’s love with others in our school and wider community.

Foundation Subjects

Our foundation subjects are taught in the afternoons and follow a spiral curriculum, where key knowledge and skills are revisited regularly to help deepen understanding and strengthen long-term learning. Mr Seuke teaches us PE on a Monday and a Thursday. Mrs Cowgill teaches us music on a Monday. Please visit each curriculum page to find out more information on each subject.

Homework

Year 2 will receive 2 pieces of homework a week; spellings and mathematics. Both will be handed out on a Friday. The mathematics homework is due in on a Monday, and spellings are due in on a Wednesday (spelling test will be on a Friday). They can continue practising on ‘Spelling Shed’ and using the half termly handout.
