Year 1 PE will take place on a Monday and Thursday with Mr Seuke.

In Year 1, we work hard to make sure every child feels happy, safe and part of our class family. We follow our school values of being ready, being respectful, and being safe in everything we do—whether we’re learning, playing, or supporting each other. Rooted in our Catholic faith, we treat every child as unique and special, helping them to grow in confidence, kindness, and curiosity. It’s a place where children feel they belong and know that they’re always supported, encouraged, and valued for who they are.

“Children are a heritage from the Lord.” – Psalm 127:3
It’s simple, heartfelt, and reminds us that every child is a precious gift entrusted to our care.

At the start of the year in Autumn 1, we use a mix of familiar learning through play and more structured activities—just like in Reception. The children will have specific learning tasks to complete each week, alongside continuous provision activities that link to the topics we're exploring that half term. There’s still lots of play, discovery and fun—we just start to introduce more structured learning to help them grow in confidence and get ready for the next step in their learning journey.

There is an overview of the year on this page, that you can refer to and see what we are learning each half term.

How You Can Support at Home

Home learning makes a big difference, and your involvement is key. Here’s how you can help:

Reading Books - Your child will bring home a phonics-matched reading book every Thursday. These books need to be in school from Monday to Thursday, as we use them during guided reading sessions throughout the week. Having the books in on Monday is important, as it allows us to swap books and makes sure each child can fully take part in the week’s learning.

Reading together at home is a great way to support your child’s progress. Please sign their Reading Record and jot down any thoughts or questions you have—it helps us keep track and offer extra support where needed.

Phonics Practice - Each Friday, your child will come home with a phonics overview showing what we’ll be covering in the coming week. A little regular practice at home goes a long way—encourage them to blend and segment sounds and chat with them about the patterns they’re spotting. This can be done anywhere: writing shopping lists, reading signs when in the car or supermarket, within their play at home.

Weekly Spellings - Your child will also receive a list of weekly spellings that reflect the phonics they've been learning in class. Just a few minutes of daily practice can really boost their spelling and writing confidence. Spelling words are directly linked to the sounds we are learning that week to embed this new learning further. Spellings will be set in books and on Spelling shed, which your child will receive their own login for. Spellings come home on a Friday and the test is the following Friday.
