Music

"A good school provides a rounded education for the whole person. And a good Catholic school, over and above this, should help all its students to become saints." – Pope Benedict XVI, 2010

At Holy Family, music is a vibrant and integral part of our curriculum, ensuring that every child from Year 1 to Year 6 receives engaging and enriching musical education. Taught by our specialist teacher, Mrs Hunter, our music lessons promote essential motor skills, communication, creativity, and teamwork, all while fostering a lifelong love of music.

Our Approach to Music

We believe progress in music is the widening and deepening of knowledge, skills, understanding, and learning behaviours. Through practical exploration, children develop their ability to perform, compose, and appreciate music using singing, untuned percussion, glockenspiels, keyboards, recorders, and ukuleles.

Our well-resourced music department integrates music into a broader curriculum, linking lessons with English, maths, science, geography, and history. This approach ensures that music is not taught in isolation but enriches learning across subjects.

Musical Development at Each Stage

  • Reception: Exploring music through voices, movement, and instruments
  • Years 1 and 2: Building understanding of rhythm, pulse, and pitch through games, singing, and instrumental play
  • Key Stage 2: Advancing to structure, texture, timbre, dynamics, duration, composition, and notation

We recognise and support the range of musical abilities across our learners, ensuring inclusive learning through differentiated approaches, open-ended creative tasks, and varied groupings.

Music in Our Catholic Community

Music unites our school community. Throughout the year, pupils celebrate the Catholic faith through hymns in class liturgies, assemblies, and Mass services, fostering a sense of belonging and shared values.

Performance and Opportunities

  • Concerts and productions: Every year group performs at least once a year for the school and parents
  • Community engagement: Children showcase their talents at local events and performances beyond school
  • Music and dance: We encourage live music performances for dance events
  • Visiting musicians: We invite musicians from the wider community to inspire and enrich our pupils’ musical experience

National Curriculum for Music

We follow the guidelines of the National Curriculum, ensuring pupils:

  • Perform, listen to, review, and evaluate music from diverse genres and historical periods
  • Learn to sing, compose, play instruments, and explore music technology
  • Understand and communicate music through elements like pitch, duration, dynamics, timbre, texture, structure, and notation
