Geography
Intent
At Holy Family School, we believe that Geography helps our children appreciate the beauty, diversity, and wonder of God’s creation. Through our Geography curriculum, supported by the Kapow Primary scheme, we aim to inspire pupils to explore and understand the world around them as stewards of the Earth, recognising our shared responsibility to care for our common home.
We intend for pupils to:
- Develop a sense of awe and gratitude for the natural world as a gift from God.
- Gain substantive knowledge of locations, places, environments, and how they interconnect across the globe.
- Cultivate disciplinary thinking, asking and answering geographical questions through enquiry, observation, and critical analysis.
- Understand how human choices affect the planet and how they, as children of God, are called to live responsibly and act with compassion.
Implementation
Our Geography curriculum is delivered through the Kapow Primary scheme, which provides a broad, balanced, and progressive framework. We ensure that learning is enriched with our Catholic identity, and that pupils are given regular opportunities to reflect spiritually on their role as caretakers of God’s world.
Key features of our implementation include:
- Regular Geography lessons across the year, following Kapow’s spiral curriculum to revisit and deepen key knowledge and skills.
- Links to our Catholic faith in themes such as sustainability, natural disasters, and global inequality — encouraging reflection on how we live in communion with others and creation.
- Fieldwork and first-hand experiences, including local studies, weather observations, and mapping.
- Cross-curricular connections with RE, Science, and PSHE, especially when exploring topics such as stewardship, justice, and interdependence.
- Use of high-quality resources (maps, globes, digital tools) to support active, engaging, and inclusive learning.
We also encourage children to reflect on Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’ and to consider their learning in Geography as part of their response to God's call to "care for our common home."
Impact
By the time children leave Holy Family School, they will:
- Have a deep respect for the natural world, recognising it as part of God’s creation.
- Be able to apply their knowledge and skills to understand real-world geographical issues, making connections to Catholic social teaching and Gospel values.
- Use geographical language confidently, and demonstrate competence in fieldwork, enquiry, and spatial awareness.
- Be aware of the role they can play in building a more just and sustainable world, acting with compassion and responsibility as part of the global family.
- Be well-prepared for Key Stage 3 and beyond, with a strong foundation in geography and an enduring sense of purpose as young stewards of creation.
We believe Geography supports our mission to form curious, thoughtful, and faith-filled children who are equipped to shape a better world rooted in love, knowledge, and care for all of God’s people and planet.
