Spanish

Spanish at Holy Family Catholic Primary School

At Holy Family, we deeply value early language learning and recognise its role in providing children with the best possible foundation for the future. Developing language skills, alongside an understanding and respect for other cultures, broadens a child’s outlook and creates opportunities in adult life. Language connects us emotionally and defines our identity. By appreciating the diversity of cultures, we foster a deeper sense of community and belonging.

The Importance of Learning Languages

Introducing children to foreign languages at an early age encourages curiosity and helps build a strong foundation for future learning. Research suggests that children are more likely to continue studying languages into adulthood if they are introduced to them in primary school. Young learners are naturally equipped for language acquisition, making early exposure particularly beneficial.

Spanish in Key Stage 2

The modern foreign language taught at Holy Family during Key Stage 2 is Spanish. All children receive Spanish lessons once a week, delivered by their class teacher. To ensure an engaging and structured approach to learning, we follow the Kapow Scheme of Work, which enables pupils to develop key linguistic skills, explore cultural traditions, and gain confidence in using Spanish in everyday situations.

Our Approach to Spanish

We aim to provide a meaningful and practical language-learning experience by:

  • Encouraging spoken communication in everyday contexts
  • Introducing key grammatical structures to enhance understanding
  • Exploring Spanish-speaking cultures and traditions
  • Using songs, stories, and interactive activities to develop vocabulary and comprehension

By embedding Spanish into our curriculum, we ensure that children leave primary school with a solid foundation in language learning, ready to build upon their knowledge at secondary level and beyond.
