Computing

At Holy Family, we use Teach Computing because it is a programme endorsed by the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) and grounded in the latest evidence-based research, ensuring our teaching is rigorous and relevant. The curriculum follows a spiral approach, allowing pupils to revisit and deepen their understanding of key concepts over time. It integrates the three core strands – Computer Science, Information Technology, and Digital Literacy – within carefully sequenced lessons, enabling children to become confident and responsible users of technology. Through exposure to a wide range of units, pupils develop proficiency as digital citizens while engaging with all ten strands of the NCCE computing taxonomy, guaranteeing comprehensive coverage and preparing them for success in an increasingly digital world.

Computing is an integral part of everyone’s lives in our community and one that is constantly evolving . We promote computer science as a valuable life skill and want to equip all children to be able to use technology efficiently. We aim to prepare children for life in a digitised society where many of the jobs that they will have, do not currently exist.

Our objectives in teaching Computing aim to develop our children to become:

  • digital citizens, who are safe and responsible in their use of technology,
  • digital communicators, using technology for effective and appropriate communication
  • digitally literate, understanding of algorithms, and how to use this knowledge to design, write and debug programs.
  • digital creators, who are logical and creative able to organise, store and manipulate digital content

Computing is taught as a discrete subject. We use the Teach Computing curriculum which has been created by subject experts, based on the latest pedagogical research and teacher feedback.

We have invested in technology to support children in becoming modern, global citizens.

Our school has 15 laptops and 34 Ipads, all of which are connected to WiFi and to the secure school network. All classes have access to the Ipads and the suite of managed apps on them. We also have technology for physical computing such as Beebots for KS1 and Crumble’s for KS2.

Interactive white boards and visualisers are used to support the children’s learning in all classrooms. All teaching areas are networked, incorporating pupil access to the internet and peripheral equipment such as digital cameras.
