Science

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing - Albert Einstein

At Holy Family, we are committed to making Science engaging, relevant, and enjoyable for all our pupils. Practical, hands-on experiences are a key feature of our science lessons, allowing children to explore concepts through investigation and experimentation. This active approach to learning encourages curiosity, deepens understanding, and increases pupil participation across all year groups.

Our Approach

Our science curriculum is designed to inspire a love of learning, enabling pupils to explore, ask questions, and develop a strong foundation in scientific knowledge and enquiry.

We follow the White Rose Science scheme, which supports a clear, consistent, and well-sequenced progression of scientific knowledge, skills, and vocabulary from Early Years through to Year 6. White Rose Science ensures that children revisit key concepts throughout their primary education, building on previous learning and developing a deeper understanding over time.

Progression in Vocabulary and Scientific Skills

White Rose Science places a strong emphasis on the development of scientific vocabulary and enquiry skills. Each unit introduces age-appropriate vocabulary, helping children to use scientific language accurately and confidently. Through hands-on investigations and structured enquiry, pupils learn to:

  • Ask relevant questions and make predictions
  • Plan and carry out investigations
  • Observe closely and take accurate measurements
  • Record findings using drawings, charts, and graphs
  • Interpret results and draw conclusions

These skills are built progressively throughout the years, ensuring pupils leave primary school equipped with both the knowledge and scientific thinking necessary for secondary education and beyond.

Linking to the National Curriculum

Our curriculum is fully aligned with the National Curriculum for Science in England, ensuring that children receive a broad and balanced education that covers all statutory requirements. This includes:

  • Developing scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry, and physics
  • Understanding the nature, processes, and methods of science through different types of enquiry
  • Equipping pupils with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science today and for the future

As part of our wider school community, pupils also have opportunities to take part in the Trust’s annual Science Fair. This exciting event allows children to showcase their scientific thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills as they design and present their own projects to peers, staff, and families. It’s a fantastic opportunity to celebrate achievement, build confidence, and promote a love of science beyond the classroom.

Eco Committee is a group of pupils who meet each term to discuss eco-friendly and environmental issues within school. This helps ensure our school is eco-friendly and prepares pupils to live with reflection of the environment.
