Maximilian Kolbe is a canonised saint, specifically a Martyr of Charity. He is known for volunteering to die in place of a stranger at Auschwitz and is a patron saint for amateur radio operators, drug addicts, political prisoners, families, journalists, prisoners, and the pro-life movement.

Martyr of Charity:

He was canonised as a Martyr of Charity by Pope John Paul II in 1982. 

Auschwitz Sacrifice:

He offered his life for a stranger in the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II.

He was a Conventual Franciscan friar and is known for his efforts to promote consecration and devotion to the Mary.

Before his arrest, Kolbe and his fellow friars provided shelter for refugees and printed anti-Nazi publications. 

Sacrifice in Auschwitz:

He died by lethal injection after surviving two weeks in a starvation cell after taking the place of another prisoner.
