Little Wandle Phonics
Phonics and Reading with Little Wandle
Our phonics programme, Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, is designed to build strong readers from the very start. With daily sessions, children are introduced to new sounds while reinforcing what they’ve already learned. These short, focused lessons help children make real strides in both decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) words.
Every child will read a phonics-matched book in school 3 times a week, with each read focused on a different aspect of reading decoding, prosody and comprehension. When the children bring their books home on a Thursday they should be reading the book with fluency. The children will be frequently assessed to ensure the book they are on matches their phonics ability.
We aim for every child to be confident and ready for the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check by the summer. This ensures they’ve built the skills they need to keep moving forward as readers and writers.

There are also some useful videos, so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home.
The attachments below:
- The pronunciation guide will help you to say the sounds right and tell you what to do with your mouth. There are guides for phase 2, 3 and 5 sounds.
- The grapheme mat is a useful resource to have out when your child is writing to help them to remember what the sounds look like in words. We use these in school when the children are writing.
- The weekly sheets that show what the children are learning each week.
